Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Schools will join districts across Western New York and New York State on Wednesday in making masks optional in schools and facilities.

The adjustment to the policy comes after the Erie County Department of Health tweeted that it was not requiring the district continue masking and as large districts statewide were planning to drop the requirement Wednesday after Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the end of the mask mandate Sunday.

In a policy adjustment released by the Buffalo Schools late Tuesday, masking is optional and advised in a number of circumstances:

- They feel more comfortable wearing a mask for personal reasons;
- They were in the same room within the school as someone diagnosed with COVID-19 for 15 minutes or longer
- They are known to have been exposed to COVID-19 in any setting within the previous 10 days
- They are moderately to severely immunocompromised and have discussed the need to mask with their healthcare provider.
