Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - In a surprise, if not stunning move, Dr. Pascal Mubenga has abruptly announced his resignation as Buffalo Public Schools superintendent.
Mubenga resigned less than one year after taking over as superintendent.
Mubenga's resignation was accepted by the Buffalo Board of Education directors late Monday in a closed-door special session. No reason was given for his resignation.
Appointed one year ago, Mubenga was given a four-year contract that paid $285,000 annually. He replaced Dr. Tonja Williams Knight, who retired at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Mubenga came to Buffalo from Durham (North Carolina) Public Schools, where he was superintendent for a 30,000-plus student population.
Dr. Ebony Prophet-Bullock was named interim superintendent as part of Mubenga's resignation package approved by the Board of Education.
