BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The City of Buffalo announced a $100 reward for information leading to the seizure of ATV's and dirt bikes that were illegally driven on city streets, Mayor Byron Brown and the police department announced Friday.
Illegal use of the vehicles has been on the rise in recent years. Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo said the department has fielded hundreds of calls related to its illegal use.
"The illegal operation of ATVs and dirt bikes in the City of Buffalo has led to accidents with injury," Brown said. "There has also been other criminal activities associated with this illegal operation. Just recently, in the City of Rochester, there were injuries that resulted in fatalities and critical injuries of people illegally riding ATVs and dirt bikes in that city."
Police believe coronavirus has played a factor in the rise of illegal ATV and dirt bike use in major cities across the region because fewer cars are on the road.
A person who illegally rides an ATV or dirt bike in the city can face a fine of up to $2,500.
To report the illegal use of these vehicles, you can call or text (716) 847-2255.
