Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Water Authority provided an update to the Buffalo Common Council on Tuesday regarding the resumption of fluoride in the Buffalo Water System.

In a letter filed for Tuesday's Council Meeting at Buffalo City Hall, Buffalo Water outlined the progress made and the timeline for implementation.

Following efforts by the Buffalo Water Board and the City of Buffalo, Division of Water, approval was granted by the New York State Department of Health (DOH) on Jan. 4 for Buffalo Water's application to resume the use of fluoride in the public drinking water system.

Subsequently, in the letter, it is stated that Buffalo Water engaged in a construction kick-off meeting with Hazen and Sawyer Engineers, GHD Consulting Services, and Veolia Water, the professional manager of the Buffalo Water System, to coordinate the implementation of the approved plan. Key aspects of this plan include installing specially manufactured water pumps, flow meters, and other necessary equipment over the coming months.

The current timeline foresees the completion of all installations by July 2024. During this period, Buffalo Water will undergo testing and invite inspection by relevant authorities to ensure the seamless integration of fluoride infrastructure into the public drinking water system.

Moreover, in August 2024, Buffalo Water aims to finalize Operator and Safety Training, with the goal of commencing production and commissioning of the resumed fluoride by the month's end.

"The Buffalo Water Authority's recent update and diligent efforts in resuming fluoride in our water system are commendable. This update underscores the Council’s commitment to transparency, public health, and well-being," said Council President Christopher Scanlon.
