Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A local non-profit is hosting a forum to discuss safety concerns at Dr. Charles Drew Science Magnet School after an attempted abduction case was brought to light by SVU Detective Richard Hy.
"We just want to make sure that we allow all the parents, students and even staff that have spoke out any concerned citizens to gather so they can demand the accountability and seek the solutions. So we just want to give them an open space that's safe," stated Founder of Bury the Violence Kareema Morris.
Morris says she didn't invite any officials from the district because she doesn't want to create a hostile environment.
"Many people are furious with the school district and the way this was handled, primarily because this person is already in jail, so it gives validity to what was stated, along with the other people that are saying that he's reputable in what he's saying. So I want to give the community a fair chance, without feeling like there'll be any backlash on them for what they have to say," stated Morris.
Bury The Violence says the community is making the following demands:
- Transparent communication and public acknowledgment of the incident
- Full cooperation with the Buffalo Police Special Victims Unit
- Emergency safety assessments and student-centered security upgrades
- Our public community meeting to address parent and staff concerns
- Immediate implementation of trauma-informed support services for affected students and families
The public forum will be held on May 1st from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET at Locus Premier Events, 289 Austin St., Buffalo, New York.
