Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The United States Postal Service calls this week before Christmas its Super Bowl. Around the country, millions of last second cards and packages are being sent out with the USPS' goal of delivering them on time.
Mark Lawrence of the US Postal Service in Buffalo says the goal is to move the 12 million parcels of mail from Thanksgiving to the end of the year. He says all employees give 110 percent.
"Most of us see the sales and service associates when we go into the post office to buy stamps and mail packages. We also see our mailman and they all do an outstanding job," says Lawrence. "But it's also the individuals behind the scenes, our truck drivers, the individuals working inside of our distribution facilities, unloading those trucks getting those packages onto the machine so they can be sorted out to the proper stations. It's a whole team effort."
Lawrence notes the USPS installed 100 sorting machines this past year. "We had the capacity to process 70 million packages a day across the country," explains Lawrence. Also, the Postal Service does not have any surcharges. "Last year, we had surcharges, and we've done away with those so you can be accustomed to the normal rates that you usually see around with the Postal Service," adds Lawrence.
He advises you to mail early and often. "If you still have some things to go out, our deadline for Priority Mail, which is our 2-3 day service, is Dec. 20. And for our Priority Mail Express that is our next day service that is Dec. 21," advises Lawrence.
