Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - The door is opening just a little bit more for people looking to cross the border in to Canada.
Though the US-Canadian border will remain closed to recreational travel until at least later in October, the Canadian Government is scheduled to unveil new guidance Thursday that will open the border up to some extended family members, international students, and those with compassionate reasons such as critical injury or death.
Anyone crossing the border will still be mandated to quarantine for 14 days.
The new guidelines will allow certain extended family members of Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents, including those in an exclusive dating relationship of at least 1 year and their dependent children.
"Through this application process, I'm unsure what exactly they're going to factor in," said Jamie Fiegel of Fiegel, Carr, and Joyce Immigration Law. "Six months of some people's relationship would be under these circumstances, which makes it really difficult to prove what is a relationship."
International students will be admitted starting October 20, if they will be attending a designated learning institution that has been identified by their provincial or territorial government as having a COVID readiness plan in place.
