Canal Fest of the Tonawandas canceled for second straight year

Canalfest

Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - While some festivals such as the Taste of Buffalo say they're ready to go this summer, other local events are pointing to uncertainty surrounding regulations as a reason they have to shut down for another year.

For the second straight year, Canal Fest in the Tonawandas will not happen.

"Sponsorship was down, from the standpoint of trying to plan the event, I believe the current max right now is 200 (people) at an outdoor event," said City of Tonawanda Mayor Rick Davis. "With so much uncertainty going into trying to plan an event of that magnitude, it just became too much."

Organizers say the biggest impact may be felt once again by the area's not-for-profit organizations, which use the event to raise money for programs every year.

"That's who I feel for," Davis said. "Between the Twin Cities we have numerous non-profits that help our residents in their greatest time of need and they rely on our event to help bankroll them throughout the year."

Davis said the door is still open for a 're-imagined' event, but he is unsure what exactly that could look like, or how soon it would need to be planned to actually happen.
