BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN).....The decision by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz to cancel a scheduled federal DHS and ICE job fair at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center has drawn a mixed bag of reactions.
To Victoria Ross, former Western New York Peace Center executive director and now an ex-officio board member, it was a brave act and she offered kudos to Poloncarz.
But, Republic County Legislator Lindsay Lorigo said she felt Poloncarz crossed the line and his decision was dictatorial.
"This was a decision that impacts many," Lorigo said. "This could have created new jobs and brought people back home to Buffalo."
The job fair was set for Sept. 1 and Sept. 2 at the downtown convention center.
Poloncarz cited several reasons for cancelling the job fair including security concerns and the aggressive actions both the DHS and ICE have taken against immigrants both locally and nationally.
"Their lawless policing of our community has to stop,: Ross said. :"I'm glad Mark had the sense to shut it dowb."
