Casilio counters Poloncarz claim that migrant situation has no financial impact on local governments

Poloncarz: "There has been no financial impact to local government"

Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - Republican candidate for Erie County Executive, Chrissy Casilio is taking exception to a statement made by Democrat incumbent County Executive Mark Poloncarz on WBEN on Saturday about costs to local government associated with the ongoing migrant situation.

"There has been no financial impact to local government," said Poloncarz, appearing on the Peter Hunt Show on Saturday morning.

"I can't help but laugh at that comment," said Casilio in responding to a question from WBEN about the Poloncarz claim. "Who is footing the bill for the rapist who is currently on trial, because I would imagine that would be an expense, among many."

Casilio is referencing the migrant charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault in a Cheektowaga hotel.

Casilio also takes exception with the statement, asking who is covering the costs associated with police and fire emergency calls to the hotels housing migrants.

"And who is footing the bill for the migrant children in the schools," asked Casilio, adding she was told no additional funds would be made available to districts for the current school year.

The Republican candidate was surrounded by New York State Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt, U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney and Niagara County Legislator Richard Andres, who all joined Casilio in criticism of the decided difference between how the migrant situation has been handled in Erie County compared to Niagara County, where a state of emergency was declared to prevent migrants from populating the county from New York City.

When members of the Erie County Legislature's Minority Caucus requested a state of emergency, Casilio said Poloncarz called those who sought it "morally repugnant."

The Republicans all agreed the migrant situation needs to be addressed by the federal government, however, they're adamant local and state decisions can greatly effect the impact the situation has on the population.
