Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) A 70 year old Cheektowaga man is dead after a fire late Wednesday night. Police say a neighbor spotted the flames.

Around 11:15pm, Cheektowaga Police say a passing neighbor noticed a glow coming from the interior of a house on Northern Parkway. Once the neighbor also noticed smoke she walked up to confirm that there was a fire inside.

Cheektowaga Police and U-Crest Fire District responded. U-Crest firefighters extinguished a small fire inside that had nearly gone out on its own likely due to oxygen depletion in the closed up house. Police say the smoke was heavy and a 70 year old male was found unresponsive on the floor. Resuscitation efforts failed to revive the male and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The male lived alone.

Police say the cause of death is pending an autopsy and the cause of the fire appears accidental but is still being investigated. The deceased's name is being withheld pending notification of family.
