City hoping to bring safe playoff atmosphere to Buffalo

Chippewa Street in Buffalo

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Those hoping for a big party to watch Saturday's game likely won't find exactly what they're looking for, but the City of Buffalo is trying to find a different way to get a bit of playoff atmosphere to the city.

Over the summer, a portion of Chippewa Street was closed to traffic to allow for restaurants to expand their outdoor dining while complying with COVID restrictions. Now, the city and the Chippewa Alliance are unveiling a plan to block off Chippewa Street between Delaware and Franklin Saturday afternoon so the same thing can happen for the Bills' playoff game. Tables of four people, spaced six feet apart outside will be able to watch the game on a large outdoor screen.

"We will continue to work with businesses in Buffalo to be open, to be safe, to follow guidelines," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. "The businesses on Chippewa have a lot of experience with it, they did it all summer. The City has a lot of experience with it."

There will be a $50 charge per reservation, or $200 per table that will go toward the bill. Reservations can be made at reservations@recroombuffalo.com

"This will be by reservation only," Brown said. "It will not be a tailgate, it will not be a street party. You can't just come down and walk around, you can't just drive up and park on the street. This will be by reservation only to be COVID safe."
