Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - A man is in custody after police in the City of Tonawanda say he broke into a woman’s home and attacked her early Saturday morning.

The incident happened at a house in the 600 block of Fletcher Street, according to Police Chief Robert Clontz. Few details were released, but Clontz says charges are pending.

In a Facebook post, the department also shared safety reminders for residents, including:

- Walk in pairs or groups when possible;
- Stay aware of your surroundings, including people, vehicles and activity;
- Let family or friends know your route and estimated return time;
- Keep music volume low enough to hear nearby sounds;
- Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas;
- Wear high-visibility clothing;
- Trust your instincts and avoid unnecessary risks;
- Call police immediately if something feels unsafe.
