Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - What would typically be a routine Mayoral appointment has turned into something more complicated in the shadow of a proposed 25.8% property tax levy increase.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Nominee Erika Shields took some direct questions from Buffalo Common Council members Tuesday before they decide on her confirmation. Some though had made up their mind before that even happened.

North District Council member Joe Golombek told WBEN Wednesday morning he won't support the nomination.

"Mainly because the salary increased from $175,000 to $250,000," Golombek said.

Golombek told WBEN that paired with the tax increase, that pay raise is a deal breaker.

"I told the (Ryan) administration that I have supported them, against my better judgement, up until March 19," Golombek said. "I figured it's a new Mayor, he deserves to have the team around him that he wants. He was elected. On March 19 is when he made the announcement that there would be a 25% tax increase without corresponding cuts."

Council President Pro Tempore Zeneta Everhart has also signaled that she would not vote for Shields' confirmation. Shields needs five of the nine members of the council to vote 'yes' to be confirmed.
