Orchard Park, N.Y. (WBEN) - Construction at the new Highmark Stadium has been suspended following the discovery of graffiti at several locations inside the $2.1 billion development project.
Gilbane | Turner Building Co. - one of the lead general contractors on the Orchard Park construction site - confirmed the graffiti and some other minor vandalism was found Monday morning. It is believed the incident occurred during the past weekend.
"Graffiti was found in both finished and unfinished areas of the stadium project site," said Gilbane in a prepared statement.
"We suspended work and launched a full investigation in partnership with trade contractors and unions to send a clear message about how seriously we take this matter.
"Gilbane | Turner maintains zero tolerance for graffiti, vandalism or defacement of property on our project.
"This behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect the standards we expect on this project."
Work should be reinstated later this week, perhaps by Tuesday.
Sources said the stadium is about 87% complete, and still on pace to be completed this summer, before the start of the 2026 NFL season.
