AMHERST, N.Y. (WBEN)......Unlike other grand openings when deep discount retailing behemoth Costco opened its gas station Friday, there were no long lines.
In fact, there were no lines - only a smattering of customers looking for deeply discounted gas prices -- like $3.79 a gallon for unleaded gas.
The gas station opening is a prelude to Costco's first store making its local debut in October.
"We've been waiting for this," said Buffalo resident Deanna, who actually went to Costco's Rochester store to get a membership, just so she could be ready.
Costco has been one of the most coveted retailers by shoppers and developers alike.
Benderson Development was able to secure Costco as part of its The Boulevard shopping complex expansion that also includes Dick's House of Sports, which actually neighbors the massive Costco store.
But, to get gas at Costco, one has to be member as Josh from Tonawanda found out.
"It makes sense, you need to be a BJ's member to get gas there," Josh said.
And, yes, Josh took out a membership.
"The (gas) price is amazing," Josh said, who estimated he is saving at least 30 cents a gallon with the discounted gas price. 'Gotta love price wars."
