NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WBEN).....Niagara Falls is no stranger when it comes plans and attractions aimed at bolstering its tourism-based economy.

The latest:

Anthony Carter, a University at Buffalo School of Architecture graduate student wrote his thesis on the development of a gondola ride in Niagara Falls that would offer birds-eye, postcard-like aerial views of the Falls and such attractions as Goat Island and Prospect Park along with the Niagara Falls State Park.

The ride, if developed, would serve as an alternate to trolleys and another rides that offer panoramic views of Niagara Falls.

It could emerge as another attraction that helps to extend tourist's visit to Niagara Falls, supporters say.

Others say, it is a pipe dream.

Carter will make his first public presentation on the proposed ride Thursday night at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center.

"If it can draw more tourists, it certainly has potential," said Andrea Klyczek, Niagara County Industrial Development Agency executive director.

Carter's proposal is just that - a proposal generated from his graduate school thesis.

"On a scale of one-to-ten, I'd give it a four," said Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino. "But, then again I gave our Main Street (redevelopment) proposal a four and look where we are today."

Niagara Falls, Ont. has the Whirlpool Aero Car - a popular gondola-think ride that provides dramatic views of the Falls and lower rapids. The aero car attracts a steady line of tourists.

In Niagara Falls, N.Y. - there is a tethered hot air balloon ride that also offers views of the Falls and attractions like Cave of the Winds that takes tourists to the edge of the Falls.

The hurdles to develop the gondola ride are many including approval from New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that would allow the attraction to be developed.

Development costs and a timeline are open-ended.

"Personally, I'd love to see it happen," Restaino said. "It could be an incredible addition."
