Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) Cheektowaga Police say an internal investigation has begun in connection with an incident involving an off duty officer at Glen Oak Golf Course last month.

Police say a foursome of golfers became upset when an off duty officer hit a golf ball near them, causing an argument to start. Police say that group came towards the off-duty officer while several of them had their golf clubs in their hands.

The off-duty officer retreated to the rear of his golf cart. Officers say when one of the individuals continued to follow him while waiving his golf club in a threatening manner, the off-duty officer retrieved his firearm from his golf bag and placed it down at his side pointed towards the ground while telling the man to get back. The groups then separated, and the firearm was put away.

The Amherst Police Department conducted a criminal investigation into the incident and determined that no arrests would be made, documenting the event.

A supervising Cheektowaga Police Sergeant responded to the location of the incident to gather information for CPD's internal investigation into this matter.

Police say the officer immediately surrendered his personal firearm voluntarily to the supervising sergeant as the internal review process began.

That review is ongoing.
