BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – Is there a way indoor dining can reopen in the state’s orange zone?

Governor Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday there is a way: Rapid testing.

“Rapid testing poses great possibilities,” the governor said during his State of the State address. “It can be completed in as little as 15 minutes.”

The governor said rapid tests are the key to reopening the economy before enough of the population received the COVID-19 vaccine.

The governor plans to open up hundreds of “pop-up” rapid testing sites that people can go to before patronizing a business. Details on where the sites will be were not revealed.

137 out of the nearly 7,000 Bills fans who had a ticket to last weekend’s playoff game tested positive for COVID-19. The governor said the way testing was done for the game could be applied to other businesses like restaurants and theatres.

“All early indications suggest this model was successful and it poses great possibilities to reopen events to the public,” Cuomo said. “Why can’t we use rapid testing to open restaurants in orange zones? Theatres? Offices? There are so many options.”
