Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - A symbolic and important graduation of sorts for Daemen College as the institution officially became known as Daemen University in Amherst Thursday.

"The New York State Education Department Board of Regents approved an amendment to the Daemen's charter to make the institution officially a university effective immediately," stated Daemen President Gary Olson during an official unveiling on campus.

While an important distinction, Olson says Daemen has long had an impressive reputation as a university level institution. "In 2018, the prestigious Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education elevated Daemen to its highest tier, which is doctoral university, making the institution one of only three of the twenty institutions in the region to have that designation."

Daemen offers 57 baccalaureate degees, 31 masters and four doctoral programs. Daemen was established in 1947.

“I cannot think of a better way to demonstrate Daemen’s growth and sophistication than by reaching this major milestone during our 75th anniversary year," said Olson.
