Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Following an eventful summer that saw the school nearly acquire Medaille University, Trocaire College is looking forward as the school prepares for the beginning of the fall semester on Aug. 28.
The shuttering of Medaille University has changed the higher education situation in Western New York, but Trocaire College President Dr. Bassam Deeb says enrollment at the institution remains steady even with Medaille negotiations falling through.
"We had anticipated and had hoped for a bump in enrollment given our conversations with Medaille, but that didn't happen." Dr. Deeb says.
Dr. Deeb says since negotiations with Medaille fell through the school has been looking at alternative ways to attract students, such as adding additional programs. The school has already announced they will now offer a Veterinary Sciences program, filling a void left behind by Medaille. Dr. Deeb says Trocaire has hired Dr. Katie Fitzgerald, who most recently served as chair of Medaille's Veterinary Technology Department.
"We'll be going through the approval process with the state in the next six months and hopefully we can roll that out and continue to serve the community that way." says Dr. Deeb in regards to the new vet tech program.
Trocaire will be bringing in an additional five staff members from Medaille's former vet tech program with Dr. Fitzgerald. Dr. Deeb says the school has hired nine individuals total from Medaille.
