Buffalo, NY (WBEN) In 1975, Tommy Calandra wrote a song rallying the Buffalo Sabres toward their first Stanley Cup Final run. "We're Gonna Win That Cup," first recorded by Donna McDaniel Pavlock, has become a local hockey staple ever since.
McDaniel Pavlock says she got a laugh about the arrangement. "It was in the wrong key for every singer that's ever sung this song. It was so it was so low for me and for one of the other girls that sang it, and he just didn't know how to transpose, I guess, because he kept in it and that same key for every one of the people that did it," she says. Nevertheless, it was knocked out and soon, it was on the radio, and it was a hit. "I was very excited about it and also, when Rick James, also who's from Buffalo, was upset because his song wasn't getting the airplay the Sabre song was, that was pretty funny," she adds. Of all the times, she's performed it, the biggest thrill was on Aud ice. "That was the best memory of actually getting out on the ice and singing this song to all the fans," she notes.
McDaniel Pavlock's career took her to California. "I love Buffalo, but it was so cold I was ready for some sun and and I was also singing a lot here," says McDaneil Pavlock. Her resume included several years at Disney followed by a lot of tours with a lot of great bands. "I worked wtih Motley Crue, then I worked with Billy Idol, and then I also worked with Toto, which was my favorite band. And then I worked for six years with Glenn Frey from the Eagles, he had a corporate band, and it was a great band, and we had so much fun doing shows and Joe Walsh would come sometimes and do some of the corporate shows for companies like Toyota and Nissan. And it was just such a great fun thing, because I could actually not be on the road too long. I was on the road for almost 10 years with all those other bands, and it was a long time to be gone."
Now, she and her husband Tom own three businesses in California. "We have a bakery, we have a catering company, and we just recently brought bought a high English tea company where we own all the China. and we go out and do a beautiful English tea parties for bridal showers and baby showers," says McDaniel Pavlock. She says she's always been baking, but soon started a business with one of her friends in the music business. "We started this little company called Dolly and Polly catering, and we would not let people know we were catering because they thought we weren't singing any longer. So when I retired and I got married, my husband and I, we took over, the business just grew, and we've been doing it ever since. It's been about 25 years now that we've been catering," she adds.
She hope this is the year the Sabres win it all, and has one thought about celebrating. "I think it would be really funny if all the girls that that sang this song get out on the ice and sing it if they do win," she says, adding that would be hilarious.
