North Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - Dyngus Day celebrations in Western New York don't begin and end in Buffalo's old Polonia neighborhoods. They've spread far across the area as more people look to get in on the fun.
In North Tonawanda, this year will be the sixth year they're celebrating with a Dyngus Day parade.
"We thought to ourselves, why would we not bring something like this to North Tonawanda," said Matt Parish, who organized the original Dyngus Day parade in North Tonawanda in 2020. "I don't think we could have predicted it was going to be this big."
The event started small, but has grown to the point of expanding this year to include parts of the City of Tonawanda.
The new parade route will begin at Oliver and Thompson streets at 5:00pm, turn right onto Goundry Street and go to Webster in North Tonawanda's downtown. An after party will be held in the City of Tonawanda at the Canal Street Pavilion. Previously it was held at the North Tonawanda Farmers Market.
"We were kind of just outgrowing the market location for the after party," Parish said. "When the City of Tonawanda offered the pavilion we jumped on it. I think it's going to be great. I think it will be bigger than last year, and it's going to incorporate two cities which will only make it better."
