Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The primary election is in the final stretch, as early voting begins Saturday.

"You have to be an enrolled member of the party to be eligible to vote," said
Erie County Republican Elections Commissioner Ralph Mohr. "And, you also have to live in the jurisdiction in which there is an election going on."

The marquee race in Erie County this June is the Democratic Primary for Buffalo Mayor. There are also key races for Town Supervisor in Amherst, Alden, Elma, Hamburg, Orchard Park and West Seneca.

A total of 38 polling sites will be open for voters during the early voting period. Voters can use any site in the county. The appropriate ballot will be printed for them.

There are 11 sites located in the City of Buffalo, where five candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for the November election.

Mohr says usually in primaries there is not a heavy turnout. This year could be different.

"There hasn't been a new mayor in the City of Buffalo for quite some time. This is an opportunity for residents in the city to pick their candidate for November. So far, from from absentee and early mail ballots, turnout has been fairly low," Mohr said.

He will be watching key districts.

"I'll be looking at turnout in Allentown, certainly South Buffalo and North Buffalo, which is another key indication of turnout," Mohr said.

On Saturday and Sunday, polls are open in Erie County from 9 a.m.-to-5 p.m. Polls are open weekdays from 12 p.m.-to-9 p.m.
