Elderly Cheektowaga woman dies in motor vehicle accident

The 91-year-old was unresponsive and received life-saving measures by responding personnel before passing away

Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - A motor vehicle accident in the Town of Cheektowaga on Tuesday has claimed the life of an elderly woman.

Just before 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Cheektowaga Public Safety Dispatchers received emergency calls reporting the accident on William Street near Colton Street, involving a 2003 Honda Accord and a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on William Street at the time of the accident.

Upon early findings in the investigation, the Honda Accord came across the center median and a collision took place.

The 91-year-old driver of the Honda Accord, identified as Joan Lewis of Cheektowaga, was unresponsive and received life-saving measures by responding Doyle Fire Department and Rural Metro personnel. She was transported to Erie County Medical Center by ambulance, where she was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old driver of the 2002 Jeep remained on scene and has cooperated fully with investigators.

The cause of the accident and the death of Lewis are both under still investigation.
