Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - You may receive an energy rebate check from New York State this fall.

New York State is giving residents $1 billion in one-time rebate checks to combat rising utility bills. The program is part of the newly signed state budget.

Joint filers who make under $150,000 annually will see a $200 check in the mail. Joint filers making between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $150.

Anyone who files by themselves and makes under $150,000 will receive $100.

"It's kind of almost an insult what it ended up being, the number we're going to get back when you consider that we overpaid into utilities some $4 Billion for the idea of planning this more expansive electrical grid," said Dominic Cortese, Owner of Cortese Construction and host of Hammertime on WBEN. "It is symbolic in showing that they at least know that we've overpaid."

"When they start seeing those bills come in, they're going to see this relief come in as well, and know that someone, someone, and people in state government actually care about them, and we worry about them as well," said Gov. Kathy Hochul

The checks are expected to be issued in November.
