Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Ellicott District Councilwoman Leah Halton-Pope has been nominated by Erie County Democrats to replace the retiring Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes in the 141st Assembly District.
Halton-Pope was chosen by the committee to fill vacancies to appear on the November ballot after Peoples-Stokes announced her retirement last Wednesday, April 8.
“There could not be a better successor than Leah Halton-Pope, whose work on the Common Council and in Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes’ office has left her exceptionally well prepared for this moment,” State Senator and Erie County Democratic Chair Jeremy Zellner said in a written statement.
Halton-Pope joined WBEN April 8 and was asked about the then-rumor that she would succeed Peoples-Stokes, saying "My priority right now is serving my district, serving the City of Buffalo. Should I be blessed at some point in the future to serve on the state level it would be to continue that same thing."
Halton-Pope had been a staffer for Peoples-Stokes before joining the Common Council in January 2024.
The Ellicott District Councilwoman was officially announced as the nominee Sunday.
