Collins, N.Y. (IWBEN) - New York State police are investigating a fight that led to the death of an incarcerated individual at Collins Correctional Facility.
About 11 p.m., the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) notified the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation of an altercation at Collins Correctional Facility that resulted in the death of an incarcerated individual.
The preliminary investigation revealed that an incarcerated individual attacked a second incarcerated individual in a Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU), resulting in serious physical injury. The incarcerated victim was sent to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, and pronounced deceased after life-saving measures were taken.
The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Jose Aponte.
DOCCS' Office of Special Investigations is assisting with this case. The State Attorney General’s Office was also notified and responded to the scene.
This is an ongoing criminal investigation.
