North Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - The North Tonawanda Professional Firefighters are showing support by wearing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

North Tonawanda Fire Chief Joe Sikora says anyone in the department can wear the pink shirt throughout October, as long as they make a donation to a breast cancer foundation.

"This is it started with an email that I received back in 2016 with a company that was selling the shirts, and a donation of a couple dollars from each shirt purchased went to a breast cancer foundation. We bought the shirts, now we have our own printed up with our department logo and union logo on them," Sikora stated in an interview with WBEN.

At the end of the month, the firefighters union will make a donation with however much money they've taken in.

"It's extremely important. Everybody in department has friends or family that have been touched by this, so they embrace it. Pretty much everybody on the job wears the shirts, and we get a lot of positive feedback about the pink shirts," Sikora said. "There's amazing strides being made, and if you can help out through donations to organizations that are willing to help out, do so."
