Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Wednesday marks one of the most important days of the year for FeedMore WNY, as with the opening of the Erie County Fair comes an influx of donated canned goods.

A donation of four or more canned food items grants you free admission on the Fair's first day. It also helps the nonprofit at a crucial time.

"This is a time of year when donations really drop off," FeedMore's Catherine Shick told WBEN. "A lot of people aren't thinking about holding a food drive, making a food donation during the summer months. It's something that really comes to mind during the holiday season and the winter time."

All donations made Wednesday will stay in Western New York. That's why Shick emphasizes the "or more" part of "four or more."

"Bring on those donations!" Shick said. "We have trucks here, we have totes here, we have volunteers at the ready to take in those donations. We really hope to exceed what we even did last year."

Last year's number exceeded 153,000 pounds of canned goods. Some of the most important food items FeedMore needs include shelf-stable or canned protein items such as tuna, chicken or peanut butter.

Shick says FeedMore is also grateful for canned vegetables.
