Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra is mincing no words in his analysis of this year's race for County Executive between Democratic incumbent Mark Poloncarz and his Republican challenger Chrissy Casilio.
Giambra feels the campaigning has only contributed to polarizing politics.
"I think the campaign overall, has really been a disgrace," says Giambra. "It's been nothing but negative connotations. It's been nothing but divisiveness, which will continue to polarize the voters."
Giambra has observed how it's been a nasty, ugly campaign where the voters really don't know what the future holds with either of them. And it been negative tones with both their campaigns from the start.
"The Republican candidate came to the race with a tremendous amount of political baggage with the social media accounts and the activities on social media, so she was a flawed candidate right from the beginning. Mark, obviously has his own issues with his temperament issues that popped up recently in the campaign that shows that he has an anger issue," Giambra said.
Giambra feels shelf life is also an issue for Poloncarz heading into this election.
"It appears the incumbent was seeing some weakness in his numbers based on the fact that he's a 12-year incumbent. Everybody has a shelf life," Giambra said.
He also recalls his 1999 election showdown for Erie County Executive with Dennis Gorski, who was also a 12-year incumbent. As Gorski was in that position then, Poloncarz is in that position now.
Polls across Erie County are open until 9 p.m. EST, and WBEN will provide full, LIVE election coverage beginning then.
