Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, the focus shifts from spending money on goods to donating money to worthy causes.

Nov. 28 marks "Giving Tuesday" in Western New York and across the nation.

Trina Burruss of the United Way says this day is especially important. "For us, that means that 40% of our community is struggling. And giving Tuesday gives folks an opportunity to contribute to United Way, and to help us help that population," says Burruss.

Burruss says there are a lot of nonprofits doing the hard work each day to help the community. "Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for the giving to increase without necessarily a lot of effort on their part, because it's a community focus," says Burruss. She says there's been an increase in donations the last two Giving Tuesdays.

This year's United Way goal is $10 million. "We know we won't make $10 million on a given Tuesday, but certainly anything that we do receive on Giving Tuesday, we certainly appreciate it," says Burruss. She adds every dollar helps.
