Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - A display commemorating those who died in battle has arrived in Cheektowaga. The Walls of Honor: The Moving Wall and the GoldStars Tribute Wall is at Pine Lawn Cemetery until Monday.
Sam Niccorera says this has been in existence for 18 years, which has 7,200 names on it. "It is 91 feet long, nine feet tall, and it is meant to educate the public about the cost of freedom," says Niccorera. He adds you will see a sea of stars, 2.75 inches tip to tip, gold stars with the name of the fallen and the branch of the service that they served in when they were killed.
Niccorera says it is an emotional sight. "It is absolutely touching, and it touches lives everywhere it goes. It is bringing peace and is bringing closure to a lot of the families," he notes. He adds it's a sign of patriotism to see and learn about their stories, learning about their children. "It is important for families to bring their children, I think, educating the younger generation about the cost of freedom is important," he notes,
The Walls will be available for viewing 24 hours a day. Other activations will include a Veterans Village featuring local organizations providing resources and services to military personnel and their families, and an art display of local veterans listed on the Walls by Cheektowaga Middle School students.
The walls will close on Monday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m.
