Hamburg Town Supervisor discusses radiation testing

After starting in the town of Niagara, the Environmental Protection Agency and State Department of Environmental Conservation have expanded testing for radiation in the Buffalo southtowns.

Hamburg, Orchard Park, Aurora, Boston, Brant, Concord, Eden, Evans and Marilla are all on the list to be surveyed

Hamburg Town Supervisor Beth Farrell Lorentz tells WBEN the agencies are testing what they call "anomalies".

"They indicated to us that their teams would continue to conduct field work in those areas of interest, but they did stress that any 'areas of interest' that they had identified does not mean that there was contamination, just that they needed to do additional field work."

Farrell-Lorentz said the information is limited right now. She reached out to the DEC on Monday and Tuesday to find out specifically where these anomolies are showing up but is still waiting for a response,

If residents have questions about the testing, they can call 518-712-8279. It is a dedicated phone line for Erie and Niagara County residents. It is operated by the State DEC daily from 8am through 6pm.

Any additional testing, Lorentz was told, will only be conducted with permission from property owners.
