Heat and humidity stick around, with a chance of storms
AccuWeather

(AccuWeather/WBEN) A dangerous stretch of heat and humidity remains in place through the rest of Friday. Partial sunshine is expected, along with the possibility of a gusty thunderstorm. Heat index values are forecast to reach the mid to upper 90s from late morning through this afternoon.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect for all of Western New York until 8 p.m. Friday. An Extreme Heat Warning is in place for Niagara and Orleans counties until 8 p.m. Friday.

Hot temperatures and high humidity can lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, spend time in air-conditioned rooms, and stay out of the sun when possible. The forecast also calls for neighbors and relatives to be checked on regularly. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, because car interiors can heat up to lethal levels in minutes.

People who work or spend time outdoors should take extra precautions, including rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening when possible. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for outdoor workers. Anyone who becomes overheated should be moved to a cool, shaded area. Heat stroke is an emergency and requires calling 9-1-1.

Air quality is generally acceptable for most people. Sensitive groups may experience minor to moderate symptoms from prolonged exposure.

Overall, the heat and humidity are expected to remain a concern through Friday, with authorities urging residents to take steps to avoid heat illness.
