Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - After years of waiting and speculation about where and when wholesale retail giant Costco would make an entry into the Western New York market, plans are set for the first Costco store to be built in Amherst.
Amherst Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa tells WBEN a continuing and developing relationship with the retailer is paying off as Costco will build a completely new store off Ridge Lea and Bailey on a 54 acre parcel that is home to the former Tony Roma's.
"It's going to be about a year of design and approval and then you'll see ground broken in 2023," Kulpa said. "It's something that this region hasn't had."
Kulpa says the Costco construction on the Benderson property is a continued rebirth of the west end of Amherst which has seen its share of development turnover in recent years.
"We're excited to see this addition to the region, Kulpa added.
