
Town of Wheatfield, N.Y. (WBEN) - An 82-year-old woman is dead after a house fire in the Town of Wheatfield.
According to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, around 11:30 p.m. EST, they received a call about a home on Baisch Drive that had heavy smoke and flames coming out of it. The caller stated that they were unable to make contact with the elderly woman who lived there.
Responding officers attempted to enter the home but were unable due to the severity of the blaze. Fire personnel arrived on scene a short time later and were able to enter. They found the elderly victim on the first floor and extricated her.
Life saving measures were attempted, however, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire was subsequently extinguished by members of Adams, St Johnsburg, Bergholz, Shawnee Volunteer Fire companies and The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Fire Department. An estimate of the damage is not available. The name of the woman is being held until the family is notified.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Niagara County Fire Investigation Unit.
