Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After an up-and-down spring, meteorologist Andy Parker expects summer weather to be above normal in the temperature department, but will it be sweltering?
"When you start looking backwards at the spring real quick, we had a pretty mild March, and April was above normal. We definitely took a dip in the temperature department during the month of May," said Parker in an interview with WBEN.
June has been trending right at average levels. He says what sticks in people's minds was the timing of the cool weather.
"The cool arrived on the weekends, which obviously here in Western New York, are far more valuable than Wednesdays and Thursdays. So the thought the perception that people have of May is that it was a really cool month," Parker said. "And while it did trend cooler than normal, it was the timing of the rain and the cool on the weekends that really solidified that as the perception for the whole spring."
When it comes to summer, Parker says we'll see more 80s in the next 10 days.
"Going even farther than that, into July, the trend is going to be for slightly above normal temperatures. Nothing out there to indicate that we are going to be sweltering all summer long, but we will see the warm ups, but the cool downs will also come, keeping our average temperature for the summer slightly above," Parker said.
As the summer goes along, Parker adds there's a chance of a 90-degree day or two.
"The lake is the big thing that keeps us from topping 90 as frequently as other places," he said. "There's nothing to indicate 90s are coming in the near future, but as we heat up during the month of July and August, we usually grab a few of those before the summer is done."
The all-time record high in Buffalo is 99, reached twice.
