BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) The crew at Canalside in Buffalo has been hard at work over the past week preparing for a new season of ice skating that begins Friday.
"We're planning to open at 1pm and our season opening celebration begins at 5pm, with giveaways, Santa Claus and a fireworks display," said Lauren Moloney-Ford, General Manager at Buffalo Waterfront.
There's holiday lighting, a DJ, and a Christmas tree providing a festive backdrop.
"We're very excited to open, after not being able to open last season, due to Covid. We tried to keep festivities going, but it just wasn't the same without the ice rink," said Ford.
Not only is public skating opening on Friday, but there will be bumper cars and curling by reservation.
Canalside is a year round destination, with activities on the canals in the Summer, roller skating in the Fall, and skating in the Winter. Which is most popular? "It's hard to beat the Winter," said Ford. "It's a season that Buffalonians love. They bring family and friends from out of town. We try to keep it new and fresh. Even if you can't skate, you might try an ice bike, or curling."
Igloos are a recent addition to Canalside. They are warming tents with comfortable seating that can be rented for up to 90 minutes. Each holds up to eight people and they are available for reservation.
There are more eateries around Canalside this year. Nosh and Nibble snack shack is opening with a brand new menu on site. The Low Bridge Cafe is across from the rink, and Southern Tier Brewery recently opened at the former 716 Food and Sport, nearby.
The new mask mandate in Erie County does not impact the outdoor activities,
however Ford said they are requiring masking indoors, such as in the admission pavillion, and restrooms. Masks are not required while skating.
