BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Western New Yorkers this weekend are encouraged to take part in the state's second of four designated Free Fishing Weekends.

You will not need a fishing license to fish on Saturday and Sunday. Other fishing regulations, such as the size of number of fish you are allowed to collect, are still in effect.

"It's all really designed to introduce families, kids, and people of all stripes and ages an opportunity to get out, interact, and realize how many fishing opportunities we have in Western New York," State Senator Sean Ryan said Friday at Niawanda Park in Tonawanda.

Jeff Jondle from the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs said Western New York has some world-class fishing and is an underrated place for fishing.

"We have healthy fish you can eat," Jondle said. "Remember the old line: Give a man a fish you give him a meal, Teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for the rest of his life? We're trying to instill those skills."

On Saturday, kids between ages 5 and 15 can learn to fish at Chestnut Ridge Park. To attend the event, you are asked to submit a pre-registration form at www.ecfsc.org

There are 60 fishing sites in Erie County and dozens of other freshwater fishing sites across Western New York. Many fish can be caught in the Niagara River such as Largemouth Bass, Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Muskellunge, Sheepshead, and more.
