MELBOURNE, Australia (WBEN) Jessica Pegula's run at the Australian Open is over. The daughter of Bills and Sabres owners Kim and Terry Pegula won the first set in her quarterfinal match against American, and friend, Jennifer Brady, 6-4, but lost the next two, 2-6 and 1-6.
The 26 year old Pegula entered the tournament as the 61st ranked women's singles tennis player. Her standing is likely to be elevated after the tournament.
Pegula defeated two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka and No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina along with Kristina Mladenovic to reach the quarterfinals against Brady.
This is the furthest Pegula has ever gone in a major in her career. Her previous best run was a third round appearance in the 2020 U.S. Open.
Brady, ranked No. 22, advances to the semifinals.
