(WBEN) - One of the men who tackled one of the suspected gunmen in Wednesday's Kansas City shooting spoke with WBEN's sister station in Los Angeles about the incident, and what led to him and another person to take action in stopping the suspect.
Trey Filter tells KNX News 97.1 FM he was heading back to his car after shots rang out in Kansas City following the Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration.
"At that time, I didn't think they were gunshots, because there was a heavy military presence or they had firepower on top of roofs," said Filter. "I think a lot of people, if you would ask them, probably felt safe there."
Filter says another man helped him tackle the suspect.
"The gentleman helping me was screaming, 'He's got a gun!' I knew he didn't have the gun, so I tried to reach under the man to feel for it. I didn't feel a gun and I saw ribs were open, so I just started hitting him in the ribs," explained Filter.
Everyone wonders what they'd do in such a situation, and for Filter, he said it just popped out to him.
"I'm not a badass or anything," Filter said when describing his decision to tackle the suspected gunman.
One thing Filter does recall is the suspect stood out from the rest of the crowd.
"He looked sketchier than the others, and it was just a quick thing," he said. "I hit him. Then the other gentleman rolled him, and then we scrambled to get back on top of him."
Filter considers it a stretch to call himself a hero, and won't let the shooting change anything in his life.
