Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The last ever edition of the Buffalo "Skyride" will take over the Skyway this Sunday morning.

For 12 years, the Skyride has been an opportunity for bicyclists to ride on top of the Skyway as a way to promote cycling and raise money for GObike Buffalo.

Sunday will be the last time people get the opportunity.

"We're sad and excited at the same time," said Kevin Heffernan of GOBike Buffalo.

Heffernan said the rising cost of closing down the 190, Skyway, and more means holding the event just isn't feasible anymore.

"GOBike covers the cost of all the road closure equipment from trucks to road closed signs to thousands of cones," Heffernan said. "It costs us about $40,000 just to get that far before all the other event expenses."

He said this year's ride is on track to be the largest ever as registration boomed after it was announced this would be the last time.
For everyone getting the experience on Sunday, Heffernan said the view can't be beat.

"Driving it at 60 miles an hour is kind of scary, but riding it at eight to 10 miles an hour is just gorgeous."

For the ride, the following road closures will be in effect Sunday, July 19:
  • Route 5 (including the Buffalo Skyway) in both directions between Ridge Road (City of Lackawanna) and Church Street from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • 190 northbound between Exit 6 (Elm Street) and Exit 9 (Peace Bridge/Porter Avenue) from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • 190 southbound exit ramp (Exit 7) to the Skyway from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • 190 northbound on-ramps at Oak Street (Exit 6), Church Street (Exit 7), and Virginia Street (Exit 8) in Buffalo from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m.
