Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The last of Buffalo's controversial school zone cameras has been shut off.
The move comes after an angry Facebook post by a common council member.
Rasheed Wyatt says the beacon was not activated Thursday morning, which he says is leading drivers to drive higher than the posted speed limit. Wyatt says those drivers will end up being improperly ticketed for speeding in the school zone. Wyatt says the one on Bailey Avenue was still on, while others were turned off. "You turned off 19 when you needed to turn off 20," screamed Wyatt in his Facebook video.
Wyatt says the council has voted to remove school zone cameras in schools. He calls the matter "camera gate" because the only camera on is in his district. "Why? Because I'm standing up for the people in my district who didn't want these cameras because they weren't fair," fumes Wyatt.
In a statement, Brown says, "We saw University District Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt's passionate plea on Facebook Live to turn off the final school zone safety camera, located in his district on Bailey Avenue, at the Buffalo Promise neighborhood site. After watching Council Member Wyatt's plea, this final camera has been turned off. All other school zone safety cameras have already been turned off."
