BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Western New York's LGBTQ community plus city and county leaders on Wednesday celebrated Buffalo Pride week with a flag-raising ceremony at Niagara Square.
The ceremony also commemorated Pride Month in the United States and the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City.
"It was not a riot. It was a protest," LGBTQ activist Ari Moore said. "Before there was a parade there was a protest. Liberation in the 60s were in the air. Not only for black folks but for women, gays, and then coming onto trans. That spirit of liberation needs to continue and live on in each one of you who is not only LGBT or an ally or have a family in your household. Love them."
