Niagara, N.Y. (WBEN) - As radiation concerns continue to weigh on Town of Niagara families, one local business owner is stepping in with a helping hand.
Joe Iafallo, owner of Gorilla Garage Gear in Blasdell, is offering a two bedroom apartment to a family that wants to relocate because of elevated radiation levels found near their home.
"Domenic Cortese (host of "Hammertime Radio" on WBEN) and I have been partners for quite a while," he said Tuesday morning.
"We were on his show on Saturday and after our segment was a resident who lives in the impacted area. I listened to it and thought it was a shame that the government can't help them get out of there immediately. I have an apartment that is available and I offered it to any of the families that want to get out of that environment."
Iafallo said someone is interested in the apartment, which is smoke-free and does not allow pets. He added that he would be happy to cover the rent.
"I can't imagine someone knocking on your door and saying you have high radioactive readings in your yard. That's got to be mind boggling. We went through Love Canal in our area, so we should be the most experienced people in the nation on how to deal with something like this. I feel really bad for them. There should be a plan to get them out."
Iafallo said he hopes his offer inspires others in the community to find ways to help.
