Local couple sets out for Canada as border reopens to Americans

Pam and John McCarthy haven't seen their property since pandemic

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) As Canada prepares to welcome back vaccinated Americans across the border for the first time since March 2020, one local couple says they've been making the necessary plans to see their property for the first time.

John and Pam McCarthy have property they haven't seen in nearly a year and a half. "We did have some minor things happen with our boiler and a water leak, so thank God we have good neighbors who have been checking up for us," says Pam McCarthy, who notes she's heard horror stories about others who haven't been so lucky. "We're looking forward to checking on things ourselves," she adds.

John McCarthy says he's fortunate to have found a place near the beach, but couldn't start enjoying his retirement. "Here we are with my second retirement and we can't get up there, so we're really looking forward to getting there, but if it weren't for our neighbors up there, I don't know if I'd have such a rosy attitude about everything," says John.

The McCarthys say they're getting prepared to cross the border without much hassle. "We jumped through the required hoops on the digital side of things regarding getting our ArriveCAN app on our phones, getting started and that ready to go for us. We also just scheduled our (COVID) tests," says John McCarthy. "Those are needed for us to cross at the border." They add they plan to go during off-peak times to avoid delays.

What's the first thing they want to do? "I want to jump in the lake and enjoy," says Pam McCarthy. John says he's told her to go jump in the lake and "now she can finally do it."
