Retired Buffalo Police Captain and security consultant Jeff Rinaldo, on WBEN Monday, remembers the security detail for presidential visits in Buffalo; including President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton.

He said there are usually a couple of different layers of a perimeter.

But in the case of the suspected shooter at the Washington Hilton, the suspect was a guest of the hotel.

"When you're co-mingling a secured event in a public environment, there are a lot of challenges. You generally have very tight perimeters with security screening starting well before the event.

In this case, the suspect checked into the hotel on Friday, the day before the event. Because he was a registered hotel guest, he was able to bypass certain initial layers of security that were restricted to the public starting at 2 p.m. on the day of the event.

"Access to a location is huge," said Rinaldo, who added, "it all comes down to planning.Obviously, Secret Service and local police spent a considerable amount of time planning for this event and they felt they had the venue secured. There's almost no way to prevent a lone wolf attack. But ultimately, this individual did not get into the event. Events like these, with high profile people, are not going to be able to be held in public spaces, which is a shame," he said.

This is the third potential assassination attempt on President Trump.

Rinaldo noted going forward, there is now zero room for failure and he thinks we are going to see extreme tightening of security everywhere the president goes.

"Security is a monumental task. Ultimately, it comes down to highly trained law enforcement officers, doing what they're trained to do; stopping the attacks, stopping the threat, which they did."
