Hamburg, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Lackawanna City School District announced Tuesday it will be implementing a cell phone ban for students starting this upcoming school year. The district will open its doors for students for the new academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
WBEN spoke with a number of locals at the Erie County Fair on Wednesday, who agree with Lackawanna's new cell phone policy during the school day.
One parent says cell phones are too distracting for kids in the classroom.
"It could lead into more trouble than it's worth," that parent said.
With younger children, he believes it's not an issue now, but it could be as they grow up.
One former teacher likes the policy, saying students with cell phones was the No. 1 distraction, and the No. 1 reason they're not learning.
"I can't keep an eye on 30 people at the same time. They're all trying to do the same thing, which is be online in any capacity," that teacher said.
Another fairgoer, whose son is a teacher, says the policy should be in effect for all districts across the state.
