Orchard Park, N.Y. (WBEN) - One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Orchard Park, late Friday night.
Orchard Park Police say they responded to a call Friday evening on Hawthorne Drive in the town to a report about a gun and a knife. When arriving on the scene, police encountered a man with a knife and ultimately shot him when he threatened police and advanced toward them with the knife.
A neighbor on the street told WBEN she was not aware of a gun in the incident and said the man was ultimately shot by police at the end of her driveway across the street.
"When officers arrived, the man was armed with a knife, and officers gave clear commands to the male that were disregarded," Police Chief Patrick Fitzgerald said at a late afternoon news conference. Fitzgerald says the man advanced toward the officers. "It was a clear threat to the officers when he was shot."
Officers on scene immediately rendered first air to the victim in an attempt to revive him.
The knife was recovered and the department is working with the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit and the New York State Attorney General's Office as part of their ongoing investigation.
New York State Police, Town of Hamburg Police, Blasdell Police, Orchard Park Fire Company, and Orchard Park EMS were at the scene, providing assistance.
Both officers who initially responded to the scene were placed on administrative leave while the incident is fully investigated.
Further details, including the identity of the victim, will be released in the future, Fitzgerald said.
